01: Objects
Objects have been photographed in order to display visual qualities and to convey ideas. The photographers Edward Weston and Colin Wilson have used careful focus and lighting to produce black and white photographs which emphasise the textural qualities of objects. In his series Colour Still Life Albert Chong produces photographs by making an assemblage of natural and manufactured objects combined with old family documents and photographs. In her project Portraits of My Family Camilla Catrambone photographs collected objects that represent the interests of family members. Investigate relevant sources and produce your own response to Objects.
My initial thoughts of objects is that it provides the widest range of possibilities and freedom for me since there are less restrictions on what you can and can’t research. There is no exact objective you have to focus on in this prompt so you can convey your own ideas, also the skills needed for this prompt are those i am most familiar with so i can further explore the idea of 'objects'.
Edward Weston- Egg And Bone
In this photo there seems to be some sort of bone from an animal with an egg balanced above the bone in the center as it is the subject of the picture also it is in black and white, the bone and egg have no context of where they came from or what however i presume that the bone is of an animal because of the way the bone is shaped which doesn’t fit the human anatomy, and the egg is obviously from an animal. the texture of the bone is rough and dirty which almost resembles the texture of wood that could mean that this bone is aged and old to the point it has started to decompose kind of indicating the death of an animal. However the egg on the other hand is smooth and clean, this symbolizes the new life of an animal contrasting to the bone, also the fact that the egg is on top of the bone suggests how death is necessary for new life to begin in the sense of overpopulation. In the background there is a gradient of grey and white where at the bottom the grey is darker along side with the bone giving it a darker imagery whereas the top is a lighter grey along side with the egg giving it a brighter imagery, this grey gradient is associated with the light given in the picture as it is visible that the light is reflected of of the egg where the light is directed.
This means that your eyes instantly focus on the egg which then you to see the bone holding said egg, i believe that Edward Westson was depicting and exploring the concept of life and death with his photo, this could be of animals, humans or of both,

Irving Penn
Irving Penn is a well respected photographer of the 20th century, he mainly photographs with objects i different arrangements in his still life gallery. He doesn’t include unnecessary variables in his photos which don't give any meaning which i find quite annoying when photographers do this, you can tell Irving is aware of how and why he places his objects which gives his images a sense of power. Irving uses fashion, food and other items to create a variety of interesting photos which most of the time tell a story possibly from his life, however I commonly see that Irving uses food in his photos to perhaps emphasise life and vibrancy. These could be arranged to depict his memories as each photo has a curtain theme which he understands well.
This photo of irving's called After Dinner Games is my favourite of his still life gallery since i like the composition of the cards and drinks as it makes the image look random, compact and nearly chaotic yet simplistic and the message of the picture is still clear and understandable. The fact that the background is blank but the depth is visible and so an isolated perspective is created which helps focus and emphasis on the main subjects and further aides the viewer to visualise the purpose and origins of this image

Inspired photos
This photo is the one which i think came out the best as it gives the idea of a story the most out of all these photos i took, yet at the same time its ambiguous since there are different separate ideas placed together. The theme of the framed photos are a nice addition as it gives shape to the photo and makes it more geometrical too. In my opinion this photo gives me the idea of a photographer, this is because the frames and centralised collage are aspects that a stereotypical photographer uses.

Steffi Klenz
Steffi Klenz is a modern photographer based in London who specializes with photography and video. Her practice has been consistently preoccupied with the built environment, critically exploring the geography of where she works and in particular buildings which specifically indicate aesthetic and technological representation. However in this gallery, instead of using an outside environment she takes her photos in a rustic room, cluttering it with random objects which don’t really give any store or account. This gallery mostly convey her artistic views and it helps us realize the extent of her ideas as it broadens her abilities as a photographer since she explores many different topics.
A common theme in her gallery is how she uses colors to her advantage and the abstract and different shapes directed around the image. Also i realize that in most of her work here there are some sort of humanoid model or mannequin involved. This invokes mystery yet no story to attach itself to.

This photo of Steffi Klenz caught my eye the most for many reasons. First of all she uses shapes to her advantage by placing them in odd and obnoxious areas, this makes it even harder for the viewers to decipher what Klenz was thinking for this photo, and in doing so challenges the viewers to think more than they would normally. She also uses common materials like predominantly wood and areas with fabric with a background of stone, most likely indoors. There is also a common use of dolls or figures in her photos as there are 3 in this one, this almost gives an eerie feel to the photo and kind of promotes a mystery in her photos, however this could also have been done to add randomness to the photo as you can see there are many objects in this photo which do not have any correlation what so ever, which further gives the impression that there is no story to these photos.

Ben Alper
Ben Alper is a photographer based in North Carolina who explores many different art techniques and genres. One of his galleries which i am particularly interested in and looking into is called 'Terrain Vague', where he takes pictures of random objects he finds in the street, these are normally rubble or construction debis/remains and he isolates them, there are also many instances where he uses a seemingly metal wire bent around and knotted on the floor, the sun then casts a shadow with the wire to create some sort of Scribble on the floor. He then proceeds to take the photo using the rubble as the subject and produces them in black and white to create unique photos.
This photo made by Ben Alper is one of my more favorite pictures of this gallery for many reasons, one of which is the message it gives. for example there is a sense of history as the isolated flooring in the middle of the picture is separate from the rest of the floor around it, its all run down and eroding which could emphasize how its past was like, and it makes the viewers think on how Ben Alper found this place and how it got to this state. Also the black and white help envoke more mystery, i like how there are not only squares involved in this picture but curves, marked into the surrounding flooring.
